What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises designed to create strength without adding bulk. It increases flexibility, balance and the mind-body connection. Every movement is based upon drawing from the body’s core. It is founded on the work of Joseph Pilates, who brought it to New York from Germany in 1923. It is a complete system of exercises designed to train the body through controlled and correct patterns of functional movement using its full range of motion, with resistance or assistance from springs or one’s own body weight. We pay a great deal attention to overall spine health and good posture.

Pilates is for men and women of all ages. A perception in the fitness world is that Pilates is a made-for-women fitness activity.  Joe Pilates taught his system to many male athletes: weight lifters, boxers, fencers, horseback riders and acrobats. Some of the work (especially the more advanced) is ideally suited to a man’s body because of the tremendous  core strength and shoulder girdle stability required. All over the world today, Pilates is incorporated into fitness centres, professional athletes’ training programs as well as physiotherapy rehabilitation, which shows its great diversity.

It is amazing to realize that this form of exercise is over ninety years old.
